Fans’ Bookshelf

A short while ago (as I'm writing this), one of Gene's fans (thanks, Paolo) asked if there couldn't be a way or a place that his fans could exchange information & share Gene Colan items with each other. This page on Gene's site is that place! :) Below, with the help of Gene's fans, we'll be listing interesting articles or interviews that have appeared over the years, special little known Gene Colan items, maybe advertising art...anything or everything the fans want to let each other know about. If you have an item or tidbit to add to this page, you can either email me or you can let us know on the Gene Colan Discussion List.

(I apologize heartily for not remembering who contributed this to me. A few months have past & my hard disk has bitten the dust in the mean time robbing me of the original email. If the person who dropped this my way would PLEASE let me know, I'd like to at least credit folks in this section for their contributions. Thanks.)

Media appearances

Phenix #21 (1972)
French comics magazine article about TV appearance on "Du Tac au Tac"
left to right: Hugo Pratt, Al Williamson, Gene Colan, Franck Robbins

It was a session in New York for a French TV show called "Du Tac au Tac". The picture has been taken during the session, it is a back view of the four artists "in action".

This meeting between european and US artists also include (during other sessions) Jim Steranko, Neal Adams, Joe Kubert, John Buscema, Burne Hogarth, Mike Kaluta, Berni Wrightson, Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Davis, Will Elder, Johnny Hart and Brant Harker for the US side, and Gir (Moebius), Philippe Druillet, Robert Gigi, Jean Claude Forrest and Claire Bretecher for the European side.

The magazine contains 6 pages, with great illustrations (unfortunately, the one I join is the only one with Gene), about this unique meeting. I will try to find a copy of the broadcast (not an easy target, the French National Institute of Audiovisual is more defended than Fort Knox !!!).

Few months ago, I ask Gene if he had any remembrance about this "event". This is his answer:

"I remember the t.v. show ...they told us at the end that they forgot to put film in the camera so the whole thing was for nothing. That's what stands out in my mind."
