| Comments: | First off, let me say thank you for the years of enjoyment that you have provided me since I was 8 yrs. old. I found this site in comic profiles (your issue), found that you had a web site and went straight to it. Your work was probably the biggest influence to me getting and staying involved in art. Currently I'm an art teacher in Harrisburg, PA, and alot of the teacher part came from the enjoyment that you gave me in my childhood. From first experinces with you work in Wonder Woman, to the love of Doctor Strange, that had me collect every issue I could find (and that is almost all, all of yours in fact) you made a difference in my life. For the longest time growing up I wanted to be a comic book artist. Since college, I've kinda given that up, but my photographic work still is very similar to your drawings. Your influence paid off in another area of art. And, if I had to say just one thing, you made dream and work to live those dreams. Thank you's are not enough. You are truly a legend.
Shannon Lippy Harrisburg, PA P.S. For every great man, there is a great woman behind him they say. Well, the article told me that you definately have a wonderful wife/partner to help you share your dreams with. So, extra thanks to her for giving you the needed kick in the rear to succeed and improve. |

Naturally, I love the other pieces as well, the DAREDEVIL with all three incarnations, GOLD & SILVER is a stunner, and the DARK HEROES with THE BATMAN and DD is the next most favorite. I hope to make it to Worcester come Saturday. Crossing my fingers that I can make it! Love, Steve Cohen |

My favourite thing about your style is your use of facial expressions and backgrounds. Every pan l is a work of art in every sense of the term. I really wish I could describe that one "thing" that it is I love about your style but I just can't put my finger on it. The only other artist that had that one "thing" was Don Newton. In today's world of sty e over substance where movie deals, cartoons, lunchboxes and variant covers seem more important than taste and individuality, it would do aspiring artists good to take a cue from you. You make every character memorable no matter how significant or importa t the character may or may not be. I have a site dedicated to the showcasing of Batman sketches by comics pros. I don't know if you are familiar with it or not, but I have displayed some of your Batman work on my site. I have, of course given your site full credit as the source and posted return link. |

| Comments: | Jack Kirby, John Romita Sr., Steve Ditko, Neal Adams, Carmine Infantino, Marie Severin, Steranko — and Gene Colan — not to name a few dozen other incredible Silver Age masters — did more for me growing up than any other art form could have. But out of the all, Gene’s art has yet to be turned into the Playdoh art of today’s books. Gene is original. After purchasing my first original inked comic page created by Gene, I was hooked. The shades and shadows, the unique “camera angles,” the baroque settings and mystery all come to new life on the original pages. Since then, I have acquired four other Cola pages. (Gene – I’m sorry that they all weren’t from you) From Captain Mar-vell to Dr. Strange, through Dracula — and in my case especially — Howard the Duck, you proved to be the most unique comic artist in the industry. Your style cannot be duplicated because of the emotion and interaction you had with your wr ters and storylines. While others continue to mimic Jack Kirby (and others, with limited success), yours was too intimidating and original of a style. And in the current “X-team” style of drawing presently killing the industry, your style will never grace another large distribution title again. Sad. I am glad that you have an Internet site that allows us to interact a bit with you. My only complaint is that, as you sell off your personal collection, there is less and less of your master artwork on display. I’m sure that other browsers would agree tha I would like for more of your original art to be displayed. How are people to know how wonderful and unique your style is? I would gladly allow you to display the four comic book pages, daily newspaper original (inked by you as well) and pen sketch of Howard the Duck from my collection, just to display the way you handled this semi-underground character. |

| Comments: | I've said this privately to Adrienne & Gene, but I want to say it publicly, too: it is such a delight to buy original artwork from the Colans. They offer beautiful work at bargain prices, and their customer service skills put most retailers to shame. Ther are a lot of art dealers in the marketplace -- many of them equally as kind and service-oriented -- but in art collecting there's just no greater satisfaction than buying a piece of art and knowing that every cent of your money is going straight to the a tist. I've bought probably a half-dozen pieces from the Colans this past year, and each time I couldn't help but be overwhelmed 1) by the beauty of the originals (God, I'd love to see the Colan/Palmer Draculas reprinted "EC Library" style in oversized bla k-and-white), and 2) the satisfaction of knowing that the Colans received every penny of the purchase price. Patronize the Colans. For all the entertainment Gene brought us for all those years -- Daredevil, Dracula, Dr. Strange, Ragamuffins ... -- he deserves every bit of support we can send him in his (semi?) retirement. best, Tom Field |

| Comments: | This is just a short comment to state how wonderful it is to discover a website dedicated to Gene Colan! He had an immense influence on
me as an artist when I was just a young kid in the 60s and early 70s. Although I've changed considerably over the years as anybody will see who goes to my website (I'm a rather conceptual abstract painter), I can't thank Gene enough for the inspiration. DD was my big favorite simply because of his art. In a period of severe uniformity, he truly had his own style. He should become a big influence again, as mainstream comics seem to be getting too visually uniform again. Thanks Gene. |

| Comments: | While others were making a fuss over that Kirby fellow and dropping jaws over the obscure anatomy of Ditko and later the smooth lines of Romita, I found my own personal favorite in the work of an artist who was nearly as flexible as his current red-suited hero. The book showed pathos and comedy, sorrow and joy, despair and ebuliation; and these things were all evident in the faces drawn by Gene and though the term body language was a newly coined term in the pop psychology field Colan had no trouble using he figures of his characters to depict their emotions (as he had done for years). And the panel layouts that blew us all away back then. And unlike the young Turks in comic book imageland today, those odd angles and angular panels served to direct your eyes to key plot and story developments, not just to display the muscled or mammaried pin-up of the month. Not that there weren't wonderfully endowed and well displayed people in his books. In fact my first comic book imaginary love was the indigo garbed Black Widow drawn by Gene and sensuously inked by "Wild" Bill Everett. Now I'd have to admit that I liked nearly every Marvel artist at that time, and I'd already formed an intense fondness for two characters who shared a book called "Strange Tales", so when I found out that Colan was taking over Doctor Strange I was in Seventh Heaven. Oops! It's getting late and I have to go teach in the morning. Yep, I'm a junior high teacher in Pocatello, Idaho. (that's the one out west not to be confused with Iowa). In fact I teach art, including a class on cartooning. I learned to draw when as a j nior high student myself I wanted to put my favorite heroes on my walls at home and so I started by tracing figures drawn primarily by you and that Steranko guy. Eventually, I was frustrated by such small images and tried drawing larger images freehand. Thus did I come to the field of art and eventually to the realm of teaching. I have taught for 23 years and have students working in advertising, cartooning, auto painting, tattooing and even one in Hollywood (the storyboard artist for the "Blade" movie o less). I have always considered you to be one of my most outstanding influences and one of my own personal goals is to one day ink one of your stories, but for now I just want to say thanks for all the wonderful creations and thoughtfully orchestrated fantasy s ories you've given the world.
Sincerely, Bob Beason |

| Comments: | This is a great site!! Mr. Colan, I have been a fan for a long time, and have often wondered how to contact you about commissioned art. I think your commissioned prices are fair and I will consider having something drawn. By the way, do you ever communicate with Romita(Sr.)? You guys "tie" as my favorite artists of all time. Thanks for all the great art through the years!!! Lance. |
