In Memory of Charlie Boy

"What can I say about my beloved Charlie that my wife and I haven't said to each other so many times when he was still with us?

Oh, what a friend he was! When we had to leave him at the kennel and travel off somewhere, we would almost always wish we had taken him with us. Our home now has an echo that it never had before....in every corner, in every room we expect to see him. Let me tell you, this kind of grief goes to the very core of our being.

Almost always when we would be driving and Charlie was with us on the back seat, he would let us know how much he loved us. I would suddenly feel his head on my left shoulder for a few seconds, and then he would go over to Adrienne and do the same thing. He never neglected either one of us with his love.

It is way too short of a life that they lead and oh what a profound lesson as to the real meaning of what love is all about!..."come here Charlie" and he would come at any hour. "go here - go there Charlie" and never hesitate to do it. He would dive into the mouth of a cannon and never in any way question my word.

We will carry you in our hearts forever Charlie Boy ....and the first to look for when we go."

Dear Gene~ Of course I'm a gushing fan of your work...I've been an artist for over 21 years, and started reading comics early on, inspired by YOUR artwork and countless others! But that's not the purpose of this letter...I loved your dedication to Charlie and thought I'd write to share my story with you!

In a nutshell, we lost our best friend Chaos this last July at the age of thirteen and a half. Half blind from glaucoma, almost unable to walk without an assist from my wife and I (and towels strategically placed under him to "carry him") and the ramp we built onto our house, Chaos was a rare individual who always stayed by my drawing board, and never never missed the opportunity to make a new friend, or to make someone smile!

I was working on my conception of the Rainbow Bridge early on last year when Chaos started to really fail...I wasn't sure when I'd finish it between assignments! I decided that whether he had a year or 5 more years, I should add him to the illustration (at the bottom center, smiling!) as the goodwill ambassador to this little slice of Heaven. He died one week later. We were devastated, and I almost didn't finish the illustration. In time, I found the ability to complete it, and now help different shelters that need fundraising ideas and individuals that have lost pets. I'm sending you a jpeg of the illustration and the subsequent article written about it in a local paper! I just wanted to thank you for taking the time to help people remember Charlie, a valuable member of your family! You're the best!

The year 2005 has not been a good one.

In March I had to have a beloved pet of 14 years put down for health reasons. She was so sick I could not bear to watch her suffer any more. Then in August, my wife of 25 years passed away. Then 9 days later my friend of 3 years passed away. He had lived next door to me.

Thank you for helping me deal with this.

Medusa & Benny Boy, both minature pinschers, have been a real blessing to us. Medusa or "Poochie" as we like to call her is 3 years old and was a rescue from CARE Rescue, Campell CA and Benny Boy is 2 years old and was also a rescue from Ohlone Rescue, Fremont CA. Benny came to us with a broken pelvis but is doing just fine now after his operation. It was rough going for a while & we felt so bad. What kind of monster would do this to a young pup? There were no signs that he had been hit by a car so the conclusion was that he had, unfortunately, been abused. We had to give him tranquilizers for a few weeks which really zonked him out but kept him off his healing pelvis.

Gene and I have had many conversations about our pets, having to leave them behind when travelling and about how each have their own personalities etc. but the one thing that stands out is the love and companionship we share with our pets that brings such joy into our lives. Gene always asks, "How are the dogs?" Having met Charlie Boy on several occassions we will surely miss the old boy & wish he could have met Poochie & Benny. I'll remember playing with him in the yard, he loved that frisbee.
