Gene has got one of the most amazing groups of fans...let me explain: first off, the discussion list is one of the most congenial, helpful, constructive lists I've ever had the privilege of being on. The range of expertise is incredible: there are folks who just like the way Gene's stuff looks, and there are people who've made a career in art (fine art, comics, art history, etc.). He's also got an incredible international following as well. While folks all over the world have joined our little list, Gene's Italian & French fans seem to have particularly strong contingents and are very passionate about his work. If you'd like to see where some of Gene's fans who are listed below come from, you can check out the Fan Map.
Below are brief bios of some of the folks that participate in our discussion list, so you can see for yourself what kind of folks these fans are. Gene & Adrienne are kind enough to refer to us collectively as their little onelist family (Adrienne suggested the title above). I've included some info that folks on the list were kind enough to send me, and of course couldn't help myself but add a few comments of my own here & there. Hope you enjoy this peek into some of the folks that Gene's work has affected & meant so much to over the years.

My first contact with the art of Gene Colan. In 1973 with the french version of DD. I was hooked! Gentleman Gene gave DD his real personnality! But for me Dracula and Dr Strange are the two characters for Gene's style. Gothic and realistic! As we say in France: Bonne journée à vous tous et à bientot; Cordialement |

Sooner or later Iíll finish collecting the entire run of the Howard the Duck newspaper strip. But most of all the feeling of community that has brought together fans of Gene Colan to this site and to the chat group is somewhat overwhelming. I love it. Plus the fact that I've been collecting original art by the Dean, well I could almost cry. Editorial: Joe is the penultimate Howard fan - a self-appointed Howard historian/librarian. Many of you may not completely understand the folly/madness involved in such a position, but be glad that such folks are willing to don those cloaks and provide a repository of material and information that will still be available 20-30 years after no one else can find a particular strip or piece of artwork! And I'm certainly honored that Howard's librarian is part of our little gang of merry men! Joe also gets teased a little about his midwest directness on the list, but he's a real gent, a cat lover, and a true marshmallow underneath that Ohio exterior. And, btw, "Brusky" is pronounced as in dusk, not like "brew-ski". |

Favorite authors include Robert B. Parker, Madeline L'Engle, and Theodore Geisel. Anything else?: This Story Is True,,, Maybe! The doctor and nurses were startled to see that baby Steve was born with a pencil, an eraser, and a sketchpad in his hand! Steve has been learning to draw since that not so historic occasion and has drawn almost every day of his life, until the last year or so when his worsening health problems began to make it a near impossibility. Presently on a protracted sick leave from most of his responsibilities as a Fundraising Events Planner, and producer of artwork and brochures and articles for his family's business, Steve is keeping up with some work on his own computer. Very Truly Yours, Theodore Speculum, MD As soon as I am able I am moving all of my 130000 comic books and all my collectibles to a condo, where I will attempt to maintain reasonable order. Finally, Thanks To Kevin for running Gene's Website, and also to Kevin, and Tom for helping me get my much needed comic book fix when they have time! Editorial: Steve, like many of us comic fans, I'm proud to say never "grew up". By that, I mean, of course, that he's kept his sense of wonder and play. He has a toy & collectible collection that would turn any kid, and many adults, green with envy. He's also an avid orig. art collector with many pieces that are guaranteed to knock your socks off. AND he's a veritable encyclopedia of comic knowledge. You could have lunch & dinner with him for the next 3 years & probably not hear every story! Glad you're on board, Steve. |

Costa, Paolo Born: 27 Apr 1966 -- Milan, Italy Currently: Milan, Italy Occupation: Philosophy researcher, Editor, Translator Favorite Colan work(s): ? Favorite Colan character(s): Daredevil |
| Other favorites: I studied philosophy
at the University of Milan. I did a PhD in philosophical anthropology
at the University of Parma. I do research in philosophy, and
I translate from english and german for some italian publishers.
Among the other things, I am an editor in a couple of philosophical
journals, too. I have a wonderful and understanding girl-friend (bound to be my wife in a short time)whose name is Cecilia. I love cats. I play guitar and piano and love to sing. I love to read (of course). Two contemporary novelists I very much like are: Anne Tyler and Jonathan Coe (as a matter of fact, comedy is in my cords). Gene Colan is one of the oldest (maybe the oldest) passion of my life. I discovered his unique drawing style when I was 7 year old and since then I have been unable to forget it (it simply sticks in my head, that's all!). I love anything by Gene but Daredevil is my favourite character and in my dreams Gene never stopped pencilling DD. What else? As for music I love particularly CSN&Y, Joni Mitchell, REM, Counting Crows. My favourite philosophical topics are: language and human condition (gasp!). As you can easily imagine I love italian food. To be true I love a lot of italian things, but I'd very much like if we, as a people, were able to recover a little bit more of civility and civic virtues from our much neglected past. As for sports, I especially love ski and basketball. Is it everything? Anything else?: Well, of course, I am addicted to the Gene Colan Mailing-List! I love you, guys! Editorial: We love you too, Paolo! :) Paolo's the reason that the discussion list and the Fans' Bookshelf even exist. He also goes into orbit every time I post some new images on ebay or the site. Possibly one of Gene's most devoted fans ever!! |

Personally, I'm hoping to be able to make a nice living, from doing artwork, if that ever happens, I'm planning on moving to the U.S. not only because it will be easier for me to do what I do, but simply because I really like the country, and the people in itÖwell, the ones I know at least ;-). Anything else?: In early 1999, I decided to start collecting comic art. I discovered Gene Colan through his web site. Although I had read Gene's stuff as a kid, I really hadn't paid attention to the credits as a child. After learning about Gene, I've gone back to those old stories and can appreciate both the stories and Gene's work from a different perspective. Frustrated in mid 1999 at the inability to find and obtain the art I wanted, I started commissioning pieces from Gene. The result and fun I've had since is phenomenal. |

As time goes by, I see this series ever more clearly for what it is: simply the best comic book series of the 1970s. And Gene drew every issue.) Favorite Colan character(s): Daredevil, Dracula |
| Other favorites: I play guitar and bang
around on the keyboard; love to play tennis & basketball; Brian
Wilson and Paul Simon are my musical heroes; I've recently become
nuts about David Janssen's old TV series, "The Fugitive."
Anything else?: I'm a two-fingered typist. Editorial: Tom is the glue that helps hold the list together. Any number of times folks have referred to this as "Tom's list". While I may be the moderator in name, Tom is truly the moderator in spirit. If you join the list, Tom will probably be the one to say "hello", although there's a bit of a running joke to see if any of the rest of us can beat him to the punch. In person, Tom's probably even cooler than he is on the list, impossible as that seems. Tom's also written a few comics of his own -- be sure to ask him about them. The list would be a lot lonelier & quieter without you, Tom. Glad you're here! |

Editorial: Due to extreme modesty & good taste, I can't comment on my own extremely dashing looks, high intelligence, and impeccable sense of humor. It just wouldn't be proper. Hemstock,
Blair Born: 04 Sep 1953 -- Noranda, QuÈbec, Canada Currently: Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada (farther north than you really want to go) Occupation: college professor, English Favorite Colan work(s): All Marvel issues from the 1960s. At the time, I loved Daredevil best. In retrospect, I think Iron Man in Tales of Suspense might have been Gene's finest work from that era. I still have a nostalgic fondness for the Sub-Mariner, though. Tales to Astonish gave me my first glimpse of the Colan magic. Favorite Colan character(s): Horn-head, Shell-head and Wet-head, of course. No, wait a second, better add Dr. Strange to that list. |
| Other favorites: In comics? Steranko,
Ditko, Kirby, John Buscema and Neal Adams--surprise, surprise!
Outside of comics? Fiction of all kinds, shapes and sizes. Anything else?: It has been a real joy to participate in this list. Gene and Adrienne Colan are truly gracious people and the Colanites/Colanuts are wonderful, too. Editorial: Blair is one of about 4 select folks on the list who has helped immensely with the bibliography. He's also been kind enough to send me copies of the discussion digests for archiving when I've misplaced or never been sent a certain digest. A comics & Colan historian and welcome contributor to the list. Colanuts, huh? I like it! :) |

Not only a regular participant in the list discussions, Oliver has sent in the majority of all of the Colan images in the onelist files & Blair's site, contributed more to the bibliography than any other single individual, and even had the audacity (& talent!!) to ink some pieces of Gene's he pulled off the site or ebay. He even created some imaginary new covers using some of Gene's latest pencil work (this means inking AND coloring). Kudos to Oliver!! |

Marzullo,
Jeffrey Evan ("Sabbath Jeff") Born: 24 Dec 1983 -- Yonkers, NY Currently: Yardley, PA Occupation: High School Student Favorite Colan work(s): Tomb of Dracula Favorite Colan character(s): Daredevil |
| Other favorites: WHAT OTHER COMICS I READ:
Batman: Dark Victory, Earth X, Spiderman, Thor, Warlands, Steampunk,
The Tenth, F5, Adrenylynn, Soul Saga, The Hulk, Captain America,
Daredevil, Uncanny Xmen, Xmen...the list goes on. I attend comic
books shows as often as possible, too. OTHER HOBBIES: Outside of collecting comics, I'm a huge Black Sabbath fan. Anyone on the mailing list will tell ya! I listen to anything by Black Sabbath or it's core members, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward. I enjoy the other things put out by other members of Sabbath over the years, but mostly the original Sabbath and Ozzy's stuff is my favorite. I listen as well to Metallica, Queen...anything good and heavy, the way rock should be! I also enjoy eating my favorite foods. Heh, well basically anything that's good. Salami, Lox on a bagel with cream cheese, Prociutto (spelling, anyone? It's an expensive REALLY tasty lunch meat...) Pizza, Hot Dogs, Cheeseburgers, Chicken Parmesana, Chicken cutlets, Lemon Chicken, Steak, French Fries, eggs (cook em any way, I'll eat em!)...oh and who's had Nutella?? It's a chocolate/hazelnut spread from France. I discovered it in Canada. It's heaven; let me tell ya...Oh and then there's going to the movies. I have a few favorite people to go see, and they are: Clint Eastwood (Absolute Power was EXCELLENT. And don't get me started on how cool those old westerns are...) Anthony Hopkins (Instinct is my favorite movie. Really sad, but moved me.) Gene Hackman, Sean Connery (Dr. No!) Catherine Zeta Jones (hehe!) Gary Senise, Tom Hanks, anything Spielberg, anything Adam Sandler, Billy Crystal, John Belushi (The Blues Brothers is the coolest film, bar none.) Well the list goes on in that category too. Now, moving onto activities...watching TV (does that count?) Going online, playing basketball, tennis, or volleyball, swimming too. Anything else?: Editorial: Jeff's a real enigma: here's a kid who's 16 years old (as I write this) who has the taste & sensibilities of folks twice his age. I had the privilege of meeting the whole Marzullo clan in 1999, and they are a neat bunch of folks. Easy to see why Jeff turned out so cool. A little shy & reticent in person, Jeff is witty, articulate, and a force to be reckoned with on the list. We're honored by your presence, guy. |

And Drac, The Owl, The Gladiator, The Mandarin, Ultimo (hey, somebody's gotta stick up for the bad guys!) |
| Other favorites: Got addicted
to collecting original comic book art just as I joined the Colan
list in the Y2K. I also have a collection of vintage musical
instruments (keyboards, guitars, and sundry fx boxes) by way
of occupational hazard in a past life, I'm a recovered fan of
progressive rock music but still love King Crimson, and count
as my all-time favorite things, my three kids. Anything else?: I discovered Gene in the 60s, when I would buy anything and everything Marvel. He quickly became one of my favorite artists, along with (in no particular order) Kirby, Ditko, Russ Heath, and Wally Wood. Other favorite comic book artists include Eduardo Risso, Mignola, Lou Fine, Winsor McCay, Alex Raymond, and so on and yada yada. Editorial: Dom may just be the quintessential Colanut. Very quiet & unassuming, I don't even remember exactly when he started chiming in on the list, but within a very short time, it seemed as if he was an old friend/family member. We've also had some very good chats about the part of California that I was born in & he's currently residing in. Typical humble Colanut: he wasn't sure if he should send a bio in. I'm glad he did. |
